Hi @Macrakis, regarding this edit, I am interested in what you think the scope of the article should be, as I agree it is unhelpfully vague. Whonting (talk) 02:45, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
As usual on Wikipedia, the lead should be clear and explicit. The current lead doesn't work:
Chocolate is a food made from roasted and ground cocoa beans.
Does that mean that any food made from roasted and ground cocoa beans is chocolate? Are cocoa butter and Dutch process cocoa kinds of chocolate? How about chocolate bars, chocolate pralines, and hot chocolate?
I took a look at several of the sources we've discussed on your talk page and none of them define chocolate.
It seems to me that this article should focus on one of the meanings of chocolate -- probably the solid brown stuff that is used for eating, for cooking, and for making confectionaries -- and refer to other articles for other meanings such as the beverage (which came first historically).
How do others feel? --Macrakis (talk) 18:09, 5 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
If we really need to make a distinction, I would say chocolate is something ready to be consumed, while cocoa is raw or semi-finished. But the current definition seems totally fine to me. Historically, chocolate was the drink made with ground cocoa beans, or the solidified liquor when the grinding was done in advance (usually the case in European context), the latter becoming more and more refined (in every sense of the term!) and edible on its own. Everything you mentioned, from cocoa butter to hot chocolate are relevant topics, I think I would describe them all in the article. Zach (Talk) 10:05, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
